Home in the mountains

It was a whirlwind weekend of moving up furniture and boxes last Friday, shedding furniture at local consignment shops,  sorting boxes to the right spaces, unloading and distributing them, shedding even more, etc.

But it was good work. It didn't take as long to get things back into a semblance of home as it did to shed things.

And it wasn't so difficult to honor the old house that we were leaving, after all.

It's a good house, with great bones, and it looked nice even though empty, waiting for the next owners, whose truck was in the driveway.

I'm grateful for the encouragement (and discipline that was imposed by a smaller house) around shedding.

We've done well. We have space for everything, although I'm still in reorganization and shedding mode (and will be for a while!)

Our favorite pieces of furniture from our old house came with us.

Our old sofa has replaced the main sofa (an overstuffed, tufted sofa filled with feathers, which I hated for reasons from tufts to allergies).  The sleeper sofa has given way to the matching loveseat to the upstairs sofa.

And starting to rearranging things and get everything settled (all the boxes are gone, now, hooray)  will be an ongoing process, but it's finished enough, now, to feel even more at home.

Our more rustic antique pieces have simply made us feel more at home;  I still have too many "decorative" items, but as  I pare them down, we'll still be at home.

Moving to a new garden

We've been so fortunate to have a new "piece of earth" to move forward to -- there's so much that we've established of a new garden, over the past 6 years, from my raised beds for vegetables and pocket meadow in front, to the native woodland garden below the house (my gardening companion's work).

We loved this house when we first visited because of the view into the ravine forest (now greatly enhanced), because of invasive eradication and addition of understory natives.  These were fall views in previous years.



I was reminded of this as I was looking in my past posts and photos for a new blog header and thinking that I didn't really have the photo that I wanted.

It'll come.

I'm wistful this week as we approach moving day on Friday from our old house and garden, but am totally fortunate to have a wonderful new space to look forward to.

Creating a new space and garden

Consolidating to a smaller house is an "interesting" process. 

We're going to good space.

We've enjoyed it as a weekend and summer home, so we've gradually been changing things to suit it better to be our new space as home.  (It was built by an architect as his own eco-friendly house, so it was full of somewhat unusual personal choices). 

We've changed some things to suit us better over the years, but the blending with the move will bring a more dramatic change, definitely pushing it even more towards a more rustic feel, adding a few favorite old pieces we've had for many years, switching around artwork around, and deciding what suits us best.

We have a view into a ravine forest (a major selling point), now mostly freed of invasive plants.

I posted about that view 2 years ago.  It's a lovely and ongoing project.

My gardening companion has added understory natives and shrubs to the ravine forest, with woodland wildflowers on the list.  The plantings under the eaves of the house are flourishing, with Celandine Poppy and Aquilegia canadensis now in flower.

The Golden Ragwort patches are in full flower, in the front of the house (as well as transplanted patches to the sides and below) -- it's beautiful.  It's a "thug," spreading happily, and will definitely need more editing this spring.

Native plants used as "foundation" plantings

Kohlrabi: a versatile cole crop

Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) is one of the many cole crops (cabbage, kale, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and more), which have all been bred from just one plant species. Kohl is the German word for cabbage—hence they are the "cole crops" and why cabbage salad is called cole slaw. The word kohlrabi means cabbage apple in German, which makes a lot of sense because of the size of its stem enlargement and its sweet taste and crispy texture.

Because kohlrabi is easy-to-grow and has few pests in an organic garden, helps to explain its recently gained popularity with farmers markets and local food groups. It has been grown as a crop in Europe for centuries. Grown for its weird Sputnik-shaped enlarged stem-bulb with leaves sticking out at odd angles. You can consume both the enlarged stem and its leaves.

Be sure to leave enough room when you plant the kohlrabi
so they can expand to their full size. 

Planting kohlrabi


Plant seeds directly in the garden or start in flats in the fall and periodically throughout the winter until mid-February in Florida. Plant seeds or plants at 6 to 8 inches apart so they have enough room to develop. If too many seeds come up together, transplant them early so they get a good start. Amend soil well with compost and composted manure for the best growth.

Planting locations should be in full sun or slight shade with more shade for the later plantings. Mulch around stems with pine needles to keep weeds at bay and to hold in moisture. Irrigate regularly, but deeply. 

Cut the stem-bulb when it's two to three inches in diameter. Larger bulbs become tough and woody and definitely harvest before hot weather arrives. There may be some regrowth after harvesting, but usually only the leaves.
Sliced about 1/8 to 1/4-inch thin, pan-fried in olive oil, and
garnished with grated Parmesan cheese.


Preparation

There are many ways to prepare kohlrabi:
1) cook it like a turnip and all its ways (roasted, mashed, or in a soup), especially if it's 5 inches in diameter or larger.
2) grate the enlarged stem and use them in salads or instead of zucchini in breads. 

3) cut the stem into sticks and use them as dipping vegetables.
4) use the leaves as you'd use any of the leafy cole crops including veggie chips, added raw to salads or cole slaw, chopped in soups, or mixed in with a mess of cooked greens.


All the cole crops are the same species: Brassica oleracea.

A flourishing woodland garden

It's been wonderful to see how the front woodland garden along the path is flourishing this spring, along with the "foundation" plantings in front of the house.

Even the assessor (from the bank of our buyer) on Tuesday (admittedly a plant enthusiast) admired the nice combination of mountain laurel, rhododendron, fothergilla, and coral honeysuckle in front of the house, as well as the native crested iris, green and gold, Christmas fern, and pussytoes.

He also noticed the wild ginger (he told me his grandmother showed him the small flowers - the "little brown jugs."  He thought they were insectivorous because he'd seen ants in them;  I mildly suggested it was the odor, and they probably weren't insectivorous, but didn't want to totally pop that idea!

Just getting back from the mountains today, I didn't have time to take a photo. It is looking lovely.

Nice to feel like we've made a difference as good stewards of our space here in the Piedmont.
